Nero (A.D. 37–68) became Roman emperor in A.D. 54 after the death of his adoptive father, Claudius, and ruled until his suicide in A.D. 68, the last of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Despite ancient accusations, he had some popular support. Passionate about music and the arts, he famously performed publicly in Rome in A.D. 65. Though blamed for the Great Fire, he organized relief efforts and was noted for other charitable acts.
