The Capitoline Doves mosaic from Hadrian’s Villa, now in the Capitoline Museums, depicts doves realistically—one drinking, others sunning—using only colored marble cubes. Discovered in 1737 by Cardinal Furietti, it may be the mosaic Pliny described or a Hadrian-era copy, and has inspired many reproductions.
